Dr. Arkady Selenow, O.D., Diplomate ABO, F.A.A.O.

Dr. Arkady Selenow, O.D., Diplomate ABO, F.A.A.O.

Dr. Selenow, a founding partner of Manhattan Vision Associates (1984) and Queens Eye Associates (1991), graduated with honors from the New England College of Optometry in 1980. He completed internships at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington D.C., The Gessel Institute of Child Development in New Haven Connecticut and West Haven VA Hospital for Low Vision. After graduation he completed a residency in Pediatric Vision Therapy at SUNY College of Optometry where he has taught aspiring optometrists for over 25 years. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry and is a Founding faculty member of the Institute for Vision Research (1991).

An accomplished researcher, lecturer, and author, Dr. Selenow has co-authored over 40 research papers that have been published and/or presented in prestigious optometric and ophthalmologic journals and scientific conferences. In addition, he is a co-author of the textbook Amblyopia: Basic and Clinical Aspects. New York: Butterworth, 1991.

Dr. Selenow, co-director of Manhattan Vision Associates and Queens Eye Associates since 1984, specializes in difficult contact lens cases. He was in the forefront in bringing Lasik to the New York area and has co-managed over 4,000 cases. In addition he is the co-director of The Institute for Vision Research and has been a consultant for many major companies including Vistakon (Johnson & Johnson), Essilor, and Alcon.

What sparked your interest in optometry?

When I was in grade school, maybe fourth or fifth grade, I remember speaking to my mom about wanting to be a doctor, but being a bit squeamish about blood. When she told me I could be a doctor, without having to deal with blood or emergency rooms, it really stuck with me for some reason.

And even in my little yearbook from grade school, I wrote down that I wanted to be an optometrist. I mean, I misspelled it, but anyway that’s what I wrote for my dream job when I grew up!

What led you to specialize in so many different fields within optometry?
